How to use a black mirror or crystal ball for scrying, foretelling the future and penetrating the subconscious.

Witches use dark mirrors and crystal balls to contact and see spirits, for predicting the future and for opening the inner eye to unconscious realities. Similar divination practices are found across the globe and throughout history; from the dawn of time, humans have perceived supernatural images in the still waters of a pool of dark water, and in Tibet, seers gaze at a wetted fingernail.

Wiccan Tools for Scrying

Scrying may be performed with any plain surface that offers no distractions, which allows the eyes to gaze without focusing. Tools for scrying may be as simple as a bowl of inked water or a picture frame with a sheet of black paper behind the glass.

Traditional tools used by witches to scry include a black mirror, also known as a dark mirror, and the crystal ball. Crystal balls may be clear, tinted or opaque depending on the preferences of the user. In coastal regions of England, witches traditionally used the glass spheres used as fishing floats for their scrying.

How to Scry

To scry means "to discern or to perceive." Perception during scrying may take many forms, and each Wiccan must discover his or own scrying gift. These guidelines can hasten the learning process:

  • Sit in a comfortable position before a scrying tool, with both feet in contact with the earth.
  • Dim the lights to ensure there are no distracting reflections on the scrying tool.
  • Use a familiar technique to calm the mind and body. Meditation works well, a simple method entails simply being aware of each in and out breath.
  • Once fully relaxed, gaze at the scrying surface and let the eyes’ focus slip beyond its surface.
  • Continue to relax and gently let unwanted thoughts and feelings pass.
  • The scrying surface may appear cloudy or appear to receed or advance. All these are signs that the inner eye is preparing to open.
  • Gently continue to relax mind and body, do not attempt to control or force. If nothing happens this time no harm is done.
  • Very quietly wait for perceptions to come. It may help to express out loud what is perceived or to even ask questions. This can focus the unconscious, making it aware that the conscious mind is focusing its attention on the subconscious.

While scrying comes very naturally to some, most people need to persist before mastering the art. The images and insight that Wiccans perceive once they have mastered scrying are unique to each person.

Whatever a witch perceives when scrying, the experience is sure to offer insight into the magical natural realms that so often lie just beyond reach.
