Elegant crafts, made from household items or recyclables, are easily and quickly created. Yule is the winter solstice, shortest day of the year celebrated on 12/21/09.

People in the northern hemisphere take respite from cold, snowy weather by sitting by the fireside and watching flakes falling outside, while those in the southern regions enjoy air conditioned rooms on searing hot days.

Items Needed for Yule Pasta Wreaths and Box-tops

The following materials will be required to create a handmade Yule gift in the form of a pasta wreath and box top.

  • Wreath made from cardboard and lidded boxes
  • Tacky glue
  • Metallic spray paint
  • Natural or colored pasta including shells, bow-ties, spirals, wheels and tubes

Creating Yule Pasta Wreaths and Box Tops

To create the Yule pasta wreaths and box tops, glue the pasta onto cardboard wreaths or box-tops. When glue is dry, spray with metallic paint.

Boxes can be filled with a psychic mandala, crystals, a deck of Tarot or meditative cards, runes etched on clay, jewelry containing semi-precious crystals or gemstones, statuettes of symbolic animals, a psychic mandala and/or other Pagan items.

Items needed for Plastic Yule Wreaths and Snow FlakesPlastic Yule wreaths and snow flakes are also easy-to-make handmade gifts for the Pagan celebration of Yule.

  • Six six-pack plastic soda-can rings
  • Stapler
  • Tacky glue
  • One paper plate for wreath
  • Metallic spray paint
  • Pine cones
  • Plastic or silk poinsettias or other Yule plants

Poinsettias were symbols of purity to ancient Aztecs. They also symbolize cheer, success and celebration.

Assembling Snowflakes and Wreaths

To create handmade snowflakes and wreaths, begin by stapling the soda-can rings together to form a circle. Spray with silver metallic paint for snowflakes. A paper plate and plastic plants are glued into the center of the circle. Spray with metallic paint.

If silk plants and/or pine cones are used, spray wreath with metallic paint and let dry. Glue plants and pine cones onto wreath when paint is dry. Wrap thin wire around two soda-can rings and hang.

Plastic Yule Grocery Bag Wreath Decorations

Items needed for a Yule grocery bag wreath decoration include:

  • 3 plastic grocery bags
  • 1 piece of bag
  • Large paper clip
  • Metallic or green spray paint
  • Tacky glue
  • Scissors

Assembling Wreaths

Hold bags by their centers, put the ends together and clamp so they won't come apart while braiding. Braid each end, leaving about 2 inches loose. Use small bag piece to firmly tie ends together. Trim loose ends. Green spray paint makes wreaths resemble Yule greenery. Wreaths can be sprayed with metallic paint with Yule symbols glued on them.

Benefits of Plastic Wreaths and Snowflakes Gifts

Presents are inexpensive to make and look elegant. They recycle items that some municipalities may not collect, such as plastic bags. Making the presents can be a learning experience when people research Yule symbolism and plants.

Residents north of the equator can make pasta sauce for those not used in the crafts. Those in the southern hemisphere could cook the pasta and make salads. Perhaps the greatest benefit is using one’s imagination and creativity.
