Paganism offers a multitude of ‘paths’ where people from all walks are welcomed into a community and not judged based on their lifestyle choices, race, political affiliation, or opinions. It offers a place where people wishing to worship their chosen deity are allowed to do so without fear of retribution.
Paganism is not a new religion, or even one religion unto itself. Paganism comes from the Latin word "pagus" meaning "from the country." The word ‘paganus’ refers to a villager, country dweller, peasant folk, or people of the hill country. There are several modern definitions of pagan, one of the most common being "a person who is not a Christian, Jew, or Muslim."
Many pagans come from other, more mainstream religions. Some feel that something was missing for them, and in their search for enlightenment, may try many different religions before finding and turning to paganism.
Newcomers to paganism may at first be overwhelmed at the freedom of choice they are allowed, but most quickly find their own path. Although there are some religions within paganism that follow strict guidelines, most people are encouraged to do their own research and to follow what feels right for them personally.
The overall belief that most pagans hold true to is their great reverence for life, nature, and the creatures in it. The pagan path is one of learning and striving to become a positive force in the universe. They do not seek to convert others into their religions, instead, allowing those interested individuals to draw their own conclusions.
The majority of people that practice pagan religions are well-educated and have carefully chosen their path after much researching and soul searching. They may work in the community in a number of different professions and one would never know. Some even offer assistance in the community to those in need.
Worship can come in a variety of forms such as an elaborate ceremony, all the way to the simplest form of just living in harmony with nature and the elements. Some pagans choose to honor many gods or goddesses, while some honor the sacred self. They may worship with a group, or in the privacy of their own home.
While it is true that some individuals within a certain pagan path may use magic, not all do. Not all paths have or even encourage the use of magic. For some, the term magic is interchangeable with the term ‘prayer.’ Many pagans believe that magic, like prayer, is focus and intent upon a goal.
With more people becoming dissatisfied with their chosen religion, paganism is a natural attraction. It encourages thought and exploration that are not limited by the confines of holy scripture. The pagan community has steadily increased in size, and will continue to do so, hopefully with more acceptance and understanding from the world at large.
