Fabergé Eggs - Brief History
Easter of 1885 was also the twentieth wedding anniversary of Czar Alexander III and Czarina Maria Fedorovna. The emperor placed an order with jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé to create a unique egg.
Inside of what appeared to be a simple enameled egg was a golden yolk, within the yolk was a golden hen and concealed within the hen was a diamond miniature replica of the royal crown and a tiny ruby egg. Maria was delighted.
Alexander commissioned Fabergé to create a unique egg with a surprise for the Czarina inside of it each year. Nicholas continued this tradition which ended when the Romanov family, Nicholas and Alexandra, Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia and Alexei were arrested and taken from the palace.
The original Fabergé eggs were made with precious metals or hard stones decorated with combinations of enamel and gemstones. There are one hundred and five known Fabergé eggs. Only sixty-nine can be accounted for.
How to Create Faux Fabergé and Batik Eggs
Use either plastic eggs or real eggshells. To use real eggshells, pierce both ends of the egg, then gently blow the egg out of the shell. Allow shells to dry overnight. The eggs can be scrambled or used in dishes requiring beaten eggs. Use metallic spray paint to cover the eggs and/or shells.
When dry, paste on pearl and rocaille beads, small fake diamonds or other gems. Tiny charms used to make jewelry or beaded designs can also be used. The only limits are the finances, creativity and imaginations of the creator.
Faux Batik eggs from plastic eggs or empty eggshells. They 're colored and designed with the paints used for plastic models of cars, boats and other toys.
